Death And Dying In Iraq

PLUS: Good news for the rich, bad news for the rest of us...How John McCain plans to mess up our economy more than Bush already has...New sea beasts in Antarctica...You’re not mama’s favorite...and finally, Christian Siriano thinks Miley Cyrus is a hot tranny mess. Today is March 24th, and this is Mic Check. You now have permission to wear seersucker and pastels.

Celebration Excuse

Prisoners dig out of the slammer (courtesy of Tom, Dick, and Harry), Exxon slaps the environment in the face, and mycobacterium tuberculosis is the most unpopular bacterium for the day. It’s March 24 and here’s why Mic Check’s jumping on the moon.

1765

Great Britain passes the Quartering Act that requires American colonies to house British troops in their cribs, inspiring a future MTV special called “True Life: I’ve Got a Soldier in My House.”

1882

Robert Koch announces the discovery of the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis so people can now articulate what is killing them.

1944

The makings of a great movie: 76 prisoners begin the “Great Escape” out of a German Air Force prisoner-of-war camp. Mic Check digs the use of code names “Tom”, “Dick”, and “Harry” for the secret tunnels.

1965

NASA spacecraft brings images of the Moon into ordinary homes, giving teenage couples a reason to “moon watch” at home instead of heading to the usual Lover’s Lane.

1989

Another reason for Mother Nature to hate mankind: Exxon Valdez spills 240,000 barrels of petroleum into the Gulf of Alaska and exterminates thousands of seabirds, sea otters, seals, and other adorable animal critters.

Birthday band camp

1874: Masterful magician and escapologist Harry Houdini.
1962: Star Jones “I am a lawyer” Reynolds, TV personality who had her wedding sponsored.
1974: Actress Alyson Hannigan, you know her best as having a way with flutes.
1976: Quarterback Peyton Manning, the other Manning who manned up to win the Super Bowl.
