We Still Torture

PLUS: Larry Craig is in and out and in (of the Senate)...Deadly germs and you...Forced conversions in the U.S. armed forces...Congress holds contractors accountable...The pillow that keeps you from snoring...And the vegetarian dinosaur that’s giving us nightmares. It’s October 5th, and we think Robert Byrd is right about almost everything.

Celebration Excuse

Friday on our mind...

1582

Due to the implementation of the Gregorian calendar in this year, the days October 5th to the 14th technically never existed in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain. What happens on days that never technically existed stays there, so go crazy!

1921

The World Series was broadcast on the radio for the first time. As if listening to baseball on the radio doesn’t sound boring enough, it was a nine game series. Ouch.

1947

The first televised White House address is given by US President Harry Truman, establishing a long-standing tradition of interrupting quality prime-time programming for something they would’ve just explained on the news.

1962

A good day to have been in the UK: The Beatles release their first single, “Love Me Do,” and the first James Bond movie, Dr No, is released there as well. Better than tea and crumpets!

1970

PBS becomes a television network. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

Raise your glass to...

  • 1936: Vaclav Havel, playwright, political dissident, and President of the Czech Republic
  • 1947: Brian Johnson, lead singer of the Aussie rockers AC/DC
  • 1957: Bernie Mac, actor and one of the Original Kings of Comedy
  • 1975: Kate Winslet, prolific English actress who will probably always be known for her role as Rose in Titanic
  • 1983: Nicky Hilton, model, socialite, fashion designer, heiress, and younger Hilton sister

CNN’s Jack Cafferty

Our favorite curmudgeon Jack Cafferty, of Situation Room fame, stopped by The View yesterday morning to promote his new book. Topic at hand? Booze.

  • Jack Cafferty, a recovering alcoholic, on whether he’d ever been on the air drunk.
Jack Cafferty, on going on the air drunk — You do not have sufficient permissions to view this object.
  • Jack Cafferty admits he voted for George Bush…twice. (Listen for Joy Behar to ask, what, were you drinking?)
