STEAL THIS AUDIO — AMERICA GETS A RAISE

What: It was a banner day for progressives nationwide: For the first time in ten years, a new national minimum wage was enacted. The raise will come in three parts: Yesterday, minimum wage rises from $5.15 an hour to $5.85 an hour. In 2008, it will go from $5.85 to $6.55. And in 2009, it will increase to $7.25 an hour. [Mic Check] [American Progress]

Who: Representatives Barney Frank (D-Mass.), George Miller (D-CA), Rahm Emmanuel (D-Ill.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat down with Mic Check to give exclusive interviews on what the hike in minimum wage means to American workers — and where we should go from here.

Why You Should Care: Before yesterday, a full-time worker making $5.15 an hour earned $10,712 a year. (We’ll do the math: That’s nearly $6,500 below the federal poverty line, which is $17,170.)

The Audio:

  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: “But this says that what we’re about is putting forth a progressive economic agenda where many more people in our country participate in the...prosperity of our country.”
