1777

Brrrr...it’s cold in here. George Washington’s Continental Army goes into winter quarters at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

1941

Uh oh, this could get ugly. Adolf Hitler becomes Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the German Army

1998

Back when Presidents broke the law, the United States House of Representatives forwards articles I and III of impeachment against President Bill Clinton to the Senate. Can’t think of any reason for the House to do the same to Bush, can you?

2001

A record high barometric pressure of 1085.6 hPa (32.06 inHg) is recorded at Tosontsengel, Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia. Pop in that David Bowie/Queen collaboration and start rocking.

Condi’s Iraq Surprise

Who: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

What: Rice speaks in the midst of a surprise trip to Iraq. First stop, the “northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk and then on to Baghdad to meet with Iraqi leaders.” [NY Times]

Why You Should Care: The political progress we’re hoping will be coming soon? Not happening. Not only that, but Kurdish tensions with Turkey in the north are threatening to spread into a wider conflict. Three days ago, “Turkish war planes and artillery bombed Kurdish militants in northern Iraq, with at least tacit approval from the United States.” [NY Times]

The Audio

Condi spins the lack of political progress:

  • “I think that we should note that there has been some important progress. There was a pension law passed very recently which is a very good law that benefits all Iraqis.”

  • “Differences are going to emerge, but the importance is that when you have differences, political leaders who have been elected by the people to work together on behalf of the people have to overcome those differences and implement policies.”

On Turkey, northern Iraq, and the Kurdish militant group, the PKK:

  • “The United States, Iraq and Turkey share a common interest in stopping the activities of the PKK which threaten to undo the stability of the north.”
Please log in to download this clip.
  • “We have made clear to the Turkish government that we continue to be concerned about anything that could lead to innocent civilian casualties, or to a destabilization of the north.”
