The Mortgage Mess

  • Who: US Congressman Joe Baca (D-CA43) of the House Financial Services Committee
  • What: This past Wednesday the Center for American Progress Action Fund hosted a panel discussion titled, “The Multifaceted Mortgage Mess: Identifying Solutions to Protect Families and Neighborhoods.” The keynote address was given by Rep. Baca, who took the time to discuss the situation and legislation he is sponsoring to alleviate the foreclosure crisis. [American Progress]
  • Why you should care: H.R. 4135, the Family Foreclosure Rescue Corporation (FFRC) Act, would create a new, temporary entity within the federal government that would be responsible for financing loans to people currently in foreclosure or in serious default. Modeled on FDR’s Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, the FFRC would offer fixed-rate mortgages to borrowers who cannot refinance because of negative home equity caused by declining home prices, keeping families in their homes and communities secure.
