Celebration Excuse

1929

In what would come to be known as the “Teapot Dome Scandal,” Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall is found guilty of taking bribes and is the first U.S. cabinet member to be convicted while in office. (We had no idea Jack Abramoff was that old!)

1978

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act becomes a law, regulating how far the government can go in listening in on Americans through wiretaps. (This, ofcourse, is the law the White House was accused of breaking (or at least reaaal-ly bending) this year with their covert warrantless wiretaps.)

1983

The U.S. invasion of Grenada. (And unless you’re a pretentious twit, it’s NOT pronounced greh-NAH-dah. According to the country, the proper pronounciation is, in fact, greNAYda.)

POUR A LITTLE WHISKEY ON THE GROUND

1993: Master of the macabre Vincent Price dies.

1999: Knicker-wearing golfer Payne Stewart is killed when his plane crashes in South Dakota

2002: Sen. Paul Wellstone (D., MN) is killed when his plane crashes in Minnesota.

REASON FOR THE PARTY HAT

Happy birthday to Bart Simp…sorry, we mean his voice, Nancy Cartwright; our favorite chair-throwing, eternally apoplectic college hoops coach Bobby Knight; painter Pablo Picasso. And make sure to zap your slice of birthday cake; the microwave oven was born fifty-one years ago today.
