Popularity Contest

We all know that big cities are full of opportunities to have fun. But these often come at a price, and the price is at times not affordable to many. So it always delights us to learn of events that are catching to the eye, and that have the word “free” associated with them as well. And when celebrities are involved, you can be sure the excitement is doubled.

THE EVENT

New York City residents – and not only – had the chance to watch Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline perform the play “Mother Courage and Her Children” in Central Park on Tuesday. The tickets were totally free, and theater fans of all ages and income levels had the chance to see this extraordinary performance, courtesy of the Public Theater’s “Free Shakespeare in the Park”. HAPPY PEOPLE

Understandably, in order to grab on to a ticket fans had to stay in line for a long time. But the die-hards resisted, and more than 2,000 people attended the free show. Some were from Florida, some from Oregon, and some even from Israel. Many were aspiring young actors who have a hard time affording pricey tickets to standard theater performances, and who just wanted to watch their idols perform live. To give you a sense of the admiration and excitement, two young, attending actors described the event as being “like a comet in the sky,” and “like a cluster of shooting stars.'’ Poetic, we know.

COOL CELEBS

As if the fascination of a free theater event in Central Park in the middle of the summer was not enough, Meryl Streep’s and Kevin Kline’s partaking in the play made everything even more magical. Streep is the most-nominated actor in Academy Awards history, and just came out with two movies this past June. Both her and Kline have had previous collaborations with the Public Theater, especially the former, who played in five other Shakespeare plays in the past.
