Phil Jarvis, Senior VP, National Centre for Work/Life,
Career Navigation Event, 3-11-2010, on ineffective career counseling in schools
(00:42)
I’d like to just quickly touch on this myth that career development, career counseling is happening in schools, because that’s what it is. And if you went through it yourself, if your children are going through it now, students are not getting anything like what they need in terms of help. Not just to pick an occupational destination, but to learn the skills, knowledge, attitude, emotional intelligence, character, all those other ingredients that actually will go in to constructing a successful life. Part of which, will be, hopefully, successful jobs and careers. And that’s not because counselors are bad people or inadequate, it’s because the system is not letting this function happen in the school system.
