Denis Makes Sense

"Listen: I believe in prescription drugs. I believe in feeling better. But I also believe if you're sitting at the blackjack table wearing an adult diaper with a face the size of Elvis's ass and a four-hour erection -- maybe it's time to slow the process down a little bit." - Denis Leary, comedian and star of "Rescue Me" in a new HuffPost piece about the American love affair with prescription drugs. Picture of Lena Horne

R.I.P.

Lena Horne, the groundbreaking jazz singer and actress "who reviled the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them," has died at the age of 92.  Horne died Sunday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Gloria Chin. Horne was the first black woman to sign a meaningful long-term contract with a major studio, a contract that said she would never have to play a maid. "Movies are a powerful medium and always depicted African American women before Lena Horne as hefty, mammy-like maids who were ditzy and giggling," said Donald Bogle, a film historian. "Lena Horne becomes the first one the studios begin to look at differently. . . . Really just by being there, being composed and onscreen with her dignity intact paved the way for a new day" for black actresses. [WP][CBS News]

The little boy, who she named Louis Bardo Bullock, is now three-and-a-half-months old. Bullock says in the interview that she's now adopting him as a single parent, but that James began the process four years ago and brought Louis home in January. [CBS News]

Hollywood Playboy

He may be a playboy, but yesterday Hugh Hefner was more of a superhero.  The Playboy founder donated $900,000 to help save the iconic Hollywood sign, which was in jeopardy of being taken down because the land it is on was going up for sale. Hefner’s donation (plus a sizable one from Tiffany & Co.) allowed the non-profit in charge of its maintenance to keep the land. The property, which once belonged to Howard Hughes, will remain undeveloped and become incorporated into an adjacent park.  [LA Times]

Woods Worries

Tiger Woods has a fairly successful comeback appearence at last week's Masters tournament, but a report today says Tiger and his wife Elin Nordegren are finalizing a divorce.

Beyond her absence at last week's tournament, it is also rumored that Tiger Woods' new Nike ad, in which his dead father lectures him from beyond the grave, upset Nordegren. The recent report that her husband slept with their neighbor's young daughter likely did not help matters, either.  [Entertainment Tonight]

Show Me The Money

How much does it  pay to be Glenn Beck? $32 million, according to Forbes. Beck pulled in the money through a revenue stream that includes books, radio, TV, digital media, and speaking fees. But, according to Forbes, Beck earned the least amount of money through his Fox News contract. Beck earned $12 million from book sales, $10 million from his 5-year contract with Premiere Radio Networks, ads from his website earned him $4 million, speaking fees and events like his "Bold Fresh Tour" with Bill O'Reilly earned him $3 million, and his Fox News contract brought in $2 million. Add in a final $1 million from his Fusion magazine, and Beck had a $32 million year. [Huff Post]

Grampy Brett

Again, this NFL offseason has been filled with "will or or won't he" talk about Brett Favre.  But here is one "he will;" he will be a grandpa whether he plays or not next year.  Brett Favre’s 21-year-old daughter gave birth to a healthy baby boy yesterday. He told ESPN: “A grandpa at 40. It almost makes me feel old.”  No word, yet, on whether this will have an effect on his Favre's decision to play or not next season.  [Star Tribune]

They Tried To Make Me Go To Rehab

Are you a celebrity or public figure who's been caught cheating on your wife? No worries, just sign up for an expensive session in rehab, like Jesse James! According to reports, James is seeking professional help to deal with "personal issues" after a cheating scandal that has put his marriage to Sandra Bullock under fire. His rep said James "realized that this time was crucial to help himself, help his family and help save his marriage." Another setback: A 'Nazi' photo surfaced this week of James doing "sieg heil" while wearing an SS officer's hat. That can't be good for his image. [AP][Huff Post]
