Today’s Moral Hangover

During a recent radio broadcast, leading social conservative Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association explained Hitler allowing gays to serve in the military, saying Adolf deliberately recruited gays to be his "enforcers," because they had "no limits" to "the savagery and brutality they were willing to inflict." Fischer is "currently scheduled to speak at 'Values Voter' summit in September, along with Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Mike Pence (R-IN) and Mike Huckabee." [TPM]

Sarah Palin and Fox News

Quote Of The Day

"As I said to Nikki this morning, 'Hang in there. I've been there. Any lies told about you will strengthen your resolve to clean up political and media corruption. You and your supporters will grow stronger through things like this.'" -- Sarah Palin backing up South Carolina Republican gubernatorial hopeful Nikki Haley, accused today of carrying on an inappropriate physical relationship with a South Carolina blogger. Haley denies the affair. [CNN]

George Rekers, co-founder of the Family Research Council

Rekers Unravels

George Rekers, anti-gay activist caught returning from a 10-day European vacation with a male hustler, was forced to resign from the board of a "Cure The Gays" group and faces ongoing humiliation, but the ramifications of his hypocrisy could have even wider-reaching effects. Experts now say people who put him on the stand to fight against gay adoption or same-sex marriage may have to either modify their cases or withdraw their arguments. “Each lawyer must tell the court if he comes to know that one of his witnesses has given ‘false’ testimony,” said Stephen Gillers, an expert in legal ethics at New York University. That could come into play if the expert is discredited, he added. [NYT]

Souder Ten Commandments

Wowsa Quote Of The Day

"If Mark Souder is capable of sexual misconduct, it could happen to anyone," said CEO of the right-wing women's group "Concerned Women for America" Penny Nance. Really, it could just happen to anyone. Whoops! [TPM Muckraker]

Bernie Busted

"As I prepare to serve my sentence, I have had to likewise prepare Angelina and Celine, my seven and ten year old daughters for what is next to come and had to teach them that there are times when we are put in situations which are beyond our control and that no matter how undeserved, unsought, or unwanted, we must find the strength, courage, and perseverance to carry on and move forward." -- Former New York Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, who reports to prison today to begin serving his 4-year sentence stemming from tax fraud and lying to the White House during his quest to become the first Director of National Security. (He's also the guy who turned an apartment donated as a resting spot for Ground Zero rescue workers into a place to hook up with his then-mistress. Bernie also says he prepared for prison by watching Rocky movies.  [Kerik's Blog]

George Rekers resigns

Family Research Council co-founder George Rekers, caught last week returning from a 10-day European vacation with a male "rentboy," officially resigned from the board of NARTH, the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a group that pushes the idea that homosexuality can (and should) be cured. Birthers, Unite

It seems the birther movement just won't go away. In a Washington Post-ABC News poll, 14 percent of Americans still think that President Obama was born abroad. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed in the new poll say that the president was born in the United States, including 48 percent who accurately cite Hawaii. Overall, about a third of Republicans and conservatives say Obama was born in another country, or call it their best guess. [WP]

Country First, Toilets Second

Joe the Plumber has become Joe the GOP Elected Official. After an election yesterday, Samuel Wurzelbacher (his real name) will become one of 397 committeemen who oversee the party in Ohio. Though he had lots to say during the 2008 presidential campaign, Wurzelbacher was terse when reached by reporters to comment on his new job:  “Listen brother, it’s been a long day. You have yourself a nice night.” The Republican Party Central Committee has become more important recently because of two warring factions vying for control.  [Toledo Blade]

Huh? We Never Said That!

Top GOP leaders are fleeing from the phrase "Drill, Baby, Drill" as fast as their feet can take them. GOP Whip Jon Kyl (R., AZ) yesterday said, "That was not a Senate Republican phrase...I think there was a candidate that used that." (Poor Sarah, forgotten already?) Sen. Pat Roberts (R., OK) said, "I don't know about the slogan. The slogan was what, two, three years ago and basically we had a lot of opposition to it anyway." [The Hill]

America, Heck Yeah!

Yesterday at the Heritage Foundation, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) delivered a fiery, hyperbolic speech attacking the Obama administration’s national security policies. Last night on Fox News, he went a step further; the money quote: " don’t see that somehow we need apologize for anything that America has done. Are we a perfect nation? By no means. Are we better than any[one] else because of the exceptional nature of who we are? Yes."  Wow.  [Thinkprogress]

Time To Party

Surprise, surprise: A new poll found that the majority of tea partiers are in fact members of the Republican party. Although the Washington Post/ABC News poll shows that the tea party movement has a unified political message, it exposes its challenges in attracting broader support. Twenty-seven percent of Americans support the Tea Party, according to the poll. [ABC News]

Selling Charlie

Pssssst! Wanna buy a portrait of Charlie Crist, cheap? The Florida state GOP is selling an oil painting of the governor, who recently changed his party affiliation to Independent. "They say the painting was paid for by party donors, and now they want the money back." [WOKV]

George Rekers, co-founder of the Family Research Council

“Carry My Luggage” the new “Wide Stance”

Meet George Rekers, Baptist minister and co-founder (with James Dobson) of the anti-gay activist Family Research Council. Rekers is also a prominent voice in the anti-gay adoption movement. Rekers is also the guy who was just busted at the airport, returning from a 10-day vacation in Europe with a male prostitute he met through RentBoy.com. Rekers says, yes, he met "Lucien" online but had only hired him to help carry his suitcases. Lucien's ad didn't mention his luggage-toting skills, but did tout his other, NSFW attributes. Heckuva Hypocrite, Brownie

This takes that proverbial cake, big time. Failed former FEMA director Michael Brown showed up on Fox News today claiming President Obama was playing politics with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, saying, "It's pure politics. This president has never supported big oil, he's never supported offshore drilling, and now he has an excuse to shut it back down." [Talking Points Memo]
