Let’s Hear it for the Boy(s)
Merck has shifted the focus of their marketing campaign for the HPV vaccine. Now, teenage boys are the company’s primary targets. Because most men carry the virus without ever showing symptoms, experts say vaccinating them would be a huge step in stopping the spread of HPV, which has been linked to cervical cancer in women. They have, however, still had pushback from families who have moral objections to allowing their kids to be vaccinated. [Chicago Tribune]

Good News
A potential breakthrough out of the University of California today, as researchers have discovered a way to predict whether women in the early stages of breast cancer will develop deadly tumors or not. Experts say if the findings translated into simple testing in the exam rooms, they will greatly reduce the need for unnecessary mastectomies. Many women opt for surgery right away instead of waiting to see if their cancer will turn malignant. [San Francisco Chronicle]

Aliens Among Us
In a new documentary, British physicist Stephen Hawkings confirms the existence of aliens, says they’re dangerous and tells people to stop trying to contact them this morning. He went on to say: “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.” [New York Daily News]

Spare the rod, Spoil the Child?
The topic of spanking brings out strong opinions - either people are strongly pro-spanking or they vehemently oppose it. Parents who use corporal punishment say they can tell it works because their kids immediately stop misbehaving. But a new study has found that three-year-old children who are spanked more than twice a month have a “increased risk for higher levels of aggression at age 5.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

Stop Shaking Your Leg
ADHD isn’t just for kids. According to a new report, 10 million American adults suffer from the attention deficit disorder, but only about a quarter of them realize they have it. Part of the problem is that the symptoms - “restlessness, impatience, impulsivity, procrastination, chronic lateness” - are things that many people consider normal reactions to a busy life. Smile For Your Life
If you want to live to enjoy the fruits of your 401(k), you might want to smile a little more. A new study has found a correlation between the width of someone’s smile and their lifespan. Researchers found that after examining a database containing photographs of baseball players, they discovered that those with wide smiles lived about five years longer than those with little or no smiles. Previous research has shown that people who smile a lot have “more stable marriages, better cognitive skills and better interpersonal skills.” [LA Times]

Dirty Science
This is good news for all of us, though we might not want to admit it. Researchers say playing in, and even eating dirt, is good for kids. A recent study concluded that introducing germs early on in life can boost the immune system and protect from cardiovascular problems later in life. Experts warn that the study doesn’t mean you should stop insisting on washed hands, it just points out that there is “such a thing as being too clean.” [Chicago Tribune]

ENDANGER
It's a sad day to be a great white shark: According to a new study by Stanford University, the number of Great Whites have dropped below the 3,500 tigers that exist in the wild. Scientists had been under the impression that Great Whites were not endangered, because they were spotted at different areas, but the study found that it was the same sharks being seen over and over again.
