Aiding Haiti

The Obama administration is set to give Haiti $1.15 billion over the next two years to help with the country's post-earthquake reconstruction. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will offically announce the pledge later today at a U.N. donors conference that is expected to raise $3.8 billion that will go to rebuilding schools, hospitals, courthouses and neighborhoods in Haiti. CRISIS IN ZIMBABWE

On Thursday, the Red Cross announced that nearly 2.17 million people in Zimbabwe need food aid. Figures are expected to rise because of a poor harvest this year , that has declared at least 11 percent of the country's staple maize crop "a complete write-off" because of poor rains. The Red Cross aims to feed 222,000 people and has extended its emergency food operation from December 2009 until October this year. [AFP]

Trouble In Somalia

According to a new report from the U.N. Security Council, as much as half of the food sent to help the poor in Somalia "is diverted from needy people to a web of corrupt contractors, radical Islamist militants and local United Nations staff members." [NYT]

ELIMINATING MOTHER-CHILD HIV SPREAD

The United Nations is working on ways to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission, which it thinks can be eliminated by 2015 if health programs receive increased investments as planned. The Global Fund is meeting in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 24 to see how it can meet its goals eliminating instances of the three diseases by 2015. The agency estimates that between $13-20 billion are needed for the period 2011-2013. [Time]
