Interruptions

Activists from the gay rights group GetEQUAL interrupted President Obama's speech yesterday at a California fundraiser. The activists are upset over the lack of progress in repealing the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, which is now opposed by six out of ten Americans. [Towleroad]

Progress In Florida

Despite the "No Homo Mayor" campaign, Gainesville, Florida elected openly gay candidate Craig Lowe as its newest mayor this week.  Last month, the Dove World Outreach Center posted a new sign stating “No homo Mayor,” expressing their feelings that a homosexual shouldn't represent the city. Although Craig was the victor in the election, he won by just 35 votes, so there will automatically be a recount (Oh Florida, and its recounts). If Lowe takes office, he will be “among about 30 gay or lesbian mayors nationwide.” [TP]

Quote of the Day

"You don't go ahead and accommodate every behavioral pattern that is against the ideal...That would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let's go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, so we should accommodate them."-- Mike Huckabee, explaining his opposition to same-sex marriage. Since when is a little lovin' against the ideal? What Do We Want? Social Security Benefits. When Do We Want It? Now!

Yesterday, a national grass-roots campaign kicked off to demand equal Social Security benefits for same-sex couples.  Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) announced she would sponsor a bill providing equal benefits, stating, “Right now, same-sex marriage couples pay equally into a system that they don’t receive equal benefits from in return.” [LAT]

Backing Down

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) was for removing rights and protections from LGBT workers...until he got caught up in a firestorm of negative press. First, the governor removed all legal protections for LGBT state employees. Then, the Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, tried to strip protections for LGBT students from all state colleges and university non-discrimination policies, a policy which Gov. McDonnell said he supported. Many college students protested, local and national new outlets broadcast the story, and now Gov. McDonnell has issued a new directive, publicly distancing himself from the effort. Let's clear this up guys: LGBT Virginians are equal citizens, and should be protected under the law. [Wonk Room]

Canceling Prom

Rather than let a lesbian couple attend their prom together, the the Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Mississippi canceled the event for all students. The school went on to say, "It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors." A private event wouldn't be subject to the same legal standards (like equality for everyone) as the public school. [Clarion Ledger]

Coming Out

Right-wing California state Sen. Roy Ashburn has long been known as a fierce opponent of gay rights, voting against "efforts to expand anti-discrimination laws and recognize out-of-state gay marriages" and opposing the creation of a day to honor Harvey Milk. After getting busted with a DUI in front of a popular gay bar, Sen. Ashburn has also admitted this week that he is gay. The 55-year-old father of four told a local radio show "I am gay ... those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long" and asked people to pray for him. [Huffington Post]

Catholic Church Hypocrisy?  No!

In an interesting display of selective discrimination, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, in Boulder, CO,  has refused to readmit a preschooler because the child has two moms.  Two dozen demonstrators who turned out at Sunday's church service.  The church released a statement saying, "To preserve the mission of our schools, and to respect the faith of wider Catholic community, we expect all families who enroll students to live in accord with Catholic teaching. Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment." One of the protesters said it seems there's a double standard. "I don't think they interview to see what parents are divorced or what parents are using birth control or other things that are against the teaching of the Catholic Church," she said. Amen. That’s Why It Was Only Guys In There!

It turns out hypocrisy isn't just for D.C. elected officials. Early yesterday morning, a state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento, early Wednesday morning. The kicker? Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator with a long history of opposing gay rights.  Bingo! [CBS Local]

PROGRESS IN D.C.

At least 50 couples were waiting outside Washington D.C.'s city's marriage bureau this morning when it opened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, after the Supreme Court refused to block the city's gay marriage law yesterday. Although couples were able to apply for licenses today, because of a mandatory waiting period, couples won't actually be able to marry in the District until March 9th. Washington will be the sixth place in the nation where gay marriages can take place. . Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont currently issue licenses to same-sex couples. Now Just Waiting For The Sex Tapes

Miss Beverly Hills Lauren Ashley is trying to steal Carrie Prejean's spotlight by going after gays...and upping the ante. The "beauty" queen told Fox News: "I feel like God himself created mankind and he loves everyone, and he has the best for everyone. If he says that having sex with someone of your same gender is going to bring death upon you, that's a pretty stern warning, and he knows more than we do about life." Blech. [CBS News]
