Out of the Cartoon Closet
After 60-plus years, Riverdale is getting its first gay character. Fans of the cartoon "Archie" have speculated for years about the relationship between Archie and Jughead being more than just friendly. But it’s a “hunky blond” that Veronica falls for who’s charged with bringing the long-running comic into the 21st century. Said a company executive: “We want to make sure Riverdale is a very inclusive place. We want to make sure everyone’s included in Archie’s world.” [New York Post]

Act More Gay
This is something you don’t hear very often in the world of sports: You’re not gay enough. Three members of a California softball team competing in the Gay Softball World Series were asked about their “private sexual attractions and desires” before organizers determined they weren’t “gay enough” and stripped their team of its second-place finish. The decision was made when another team complained that San Francisco team’s roster had “too many straights.” [San Francisco Chronicle]

Today’s WTF Brought To You By the Catholic League
In case you missed this gem, Bill Donohue, head of the conservative Catholic League, has the Catholic Church's back these days. But the way he is defending the most recent scandal is, well, twisted. Donohue argues that since “the vast majority of the victims [of abuse by Catholic priests] were post-pubescent,” so the problem is not pedophilia — but homosexuality. So 1) no. and 2) how does this actually get anyone off the hook? [Andrew Sullivan]

Red, White and Rainbow
We the people, ready to form a more open-minded union? The latest "60 Minutes"/Vanity Fair poll found that half of Americans - a full 50% - say they would support an openly gay president of the United States, while 55% would be okay with an openly gay Supreme Court Justice and 56% said they're cool with a gay Secretary of State. And we're even more open when it comes to our sports figures: Sixty-one percent said they'd back a gay commissioner of baseball, and 62 percent said they could support an openly gay quarterback in the Super Bowl. Top Military General Pro DADT Repeal

Gen. Odeirno joins other top military brass in his views, including former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Michael Mullen, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus. [Washington Post] [NYT]
