LOVE’S IN THE AIR
Same-sex couples began marrying in Washington, D.C. today, with many lining up to pick up their licenses from D.C. Superior Court as early as 3:30am. Sinjoyla Townsend and Angelisa Young, who have been together for more than a decade, became the first same-sex couple to marry. D.C. is now the sixth place in the country where marriage equality is legal, following Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. For the video, click here. [CNN]

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL
U.S. senators are calling for an end to a 1983 ban on gay men that prevent them from donating blood, calling the prohibition "outdated, medically and scientifically unsound." Leading the group of 17 Democrats and one independent was Sen. John Kerry, who wrote a letter to US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, urging the agency to lift the restriction. "With hospitals and emergency rooms across the country in constant and urgent need of blood products, we believe certain blood donor deferral policies should be reviewed and appropriately modified and modernized while ensuring the blood supply meets the highest possible standards," they wrote. The American Red Cross and other health organizations support ending the ban. [AFP]
