Quote of The Day

"If you can't win a seat that is trending Republican in a year like this, then where is the wave?" -- Former Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), on Democrats winning the PA-12 special election last night. [NY Times]

Always Exciting in Florida

It looks like the Florida race for Senate will get even more interesting tonight.  Republicans are turning on Gov. Charlie Crist ahead of his expected announcement that he plans to run for Senate as an independent, as the party is ready to back his GOP opponent, Marco Rubio.  The Democrat running for the seat is Representative Kendrick Meek.  Crist is expected to make the announcement tonight.  [Associated Press]

Under Fire from the Right and the Left

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) plans to announce his retirement today according to Democrats briefed on his decision. Stupak garnered criticism from both conservatives and progressives as he attempted to derail health care reform by insisting on pro-life provisions already provided for by law, and then flip flopping to support the bill even though pro-life groups insisted that it would allow federal funds to be used for abortion. History Revisited

Today's WTF moment is brought to you by the suddenly hard-right-veering John McCain for Senate campaign.  As a presidential candidate, distancing himself from his party was the politically astute move. But now that he's facing a daunting primary challenge from the right, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is working to shed a label he once vigorously embraced.

"I never considered myself a maverick," he told Newsweek's David Margolick in interview to be published in next week's issue. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities."

World Wrestling Entertainment Fans

The New Swing Voters?  WWE Fans.

A new study among hundreds of thousands of Americans examines the correlation between viewers' favorite sports and their voting habits. And, the survey shows, most dedicated sports watchers are much more likely to vote with the GOP than they are to vote with Dems.  The survey had some fun little nuggets, among them:

"GOPers are most likely to watch the PGA Tour, college football and NASCAR, according to the study. Golf fans told researchers they were much more likely to vote than NASCAR fans say they are. Meanwhile, Dems hold the largest advantages among basketball fans, both those who watch the NBA and the WNBA. And fans of World Wrestling Entertainment are also much more likely to favor Dems -- if they vote. Wrestling fans are less likely to cast ballots than any other sports fans." [National Journal]

No Money, Big Problems

The Republican National Committee has been spending big money lately on a number of controversial things, but it may be the not-so controversial that cost them.

Aggressive spending helped bring stunning victories in off-year gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia last November, and in the Massachusetts special election that broke the Democratic Party's filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate in January.  But apparently the RNC wound up outspending its own revenues by about the same margin as it has outspent the Democratic National Committee since last summer, according to financial disclosure documents filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Analysts say that fact, combined with new revelations this week about lavish spending, could hobble the RNC as an engine of Republican fund-raising in this year's battle for Congress. [Yahoo]

Palin And McCain Part Deux

"Sarah did galvanize our party after she agreed to be my running mate, and the speech she gave at the convention. I am sure she will do the same thing when she comes to Arizona. It will be a very nice reunion, to have the chance to spend some time with her, and I am very grateful that she would come to Arizona."--Sen. John McCain today, saying how he's looking forward to meeting with his former presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, when she campaigns alongside him later this week. Palin is set to join the senator at two rallies at the end of the week in Tucson and Phoenix, their first appearance together in public since the 2008 presidential race. [CNN]

Don’t Stand So Close To Me

Normally, it's big news if there's one candidate in an election who has been accused of misconduct with high school girls. But now, down south, there are two candidates vying to be governor of Georgia who had their high school teaching licenses suspended for misconduct with underaged female students. It's not a partisan thing: one candidate is a Democrat, and one is a Republican. [TPM]

Did you read her platform?  No, did you?

Houston-area Democrats need to pay more attention.  Kesha Rogers, who is running for former Republican Representative Tom Delay's seat,  managed to beat out the Democrat who had the support of party leaders. But local Democratic leadership seemed a little surprised to learn that she wants to impeach Barack Obama. She also wants to colonize Mars. Rogers is a supporter of Lyndon LaRouche and a critic of the destructive financial forces of Imperial Britain. Seems like something they should have known awhile ago. [Dallas Morning News]

Sometimes, when your boss announces gay marriage will allow dudes to marry their horses, the only thing left to do is run far, far away. Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ), the guy who's running against Sen. John McCain, had his main spokesman and political consultant quit on him. [AZ Central] [TalkingPoints Memo]

Biting heads off bats = skeleton in the closet?

SHARON!  Vote for SHARON! Rock matriarch Sharaon OSBOURNE is eyeing a new career, and it isn't another terrible TV show. Believe it or not, she's considering a post in politics because she's unimpressed with the way Britain is currently run. The wife of Ozzy Osbourne is passionate about politics, but she's unhappy with the current Members of Parliament over last year's expenses scandal, which saw a string of high profile MPs resign for having over-claimed using tax-payers' money. This I Promise You

As it turns out, President Obama has actually been pretty good about keeping campaign promises.

PolitiFact has compiled more than 500 promises that Barack Obama made during the campaign and is tracking their progress on our Obameter.  So far, he's actually in line to keep over 80% of his promises.

Many of the promises are listed as "stalled," but still, not bad. [PolitiFact]

Didn’t we just do this?

As if 2008 we all missed wall-to-wall horserace election coverage so much, the Obama team to the rescue!

“President Barack Obama’s top advisers are quietly laying the groundwork for the 2012 reelection campaign, which is likely to be run out of Chicago and managed by White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, according to Democrats familiar with the discussions.

The planning for now consists entirely of private conversations, with Obama aides at all levels indulging occasionally in closed-door 2012 discussions while focusing ferociously on the midterm elections and health care reform…"

David Axelrod, White House senior adviser, and David Plouffe, the Obama for America campaign manager, will likely rejoin the campaign. [Politico]

The late Rep. John Murtha

Special Elections

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has announced that the special election to fill the late Rep. John Murtha's seat will be held May 18. Each party organization will nominate candidates, with the election occuring the same time as the nominees for the November general election for a subsequent two year term. However, the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that whoever wins the seat may not want to buy a home in Washington, D.C. since the seat is expected to disappear after redistricting before the 2012 elections.
