Ewwww

A new investigation from the Government Accountability Office shows many of those herbal dietary supplements that promise to help you shed pounds, stay smart, increase your libido and relieve your stress actually contain poison. Scientists found lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and pesticides in the supplements, which are currently not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. [NYT]

This Is Your Policy On Drugs

Most experts agree the so-called War On Drugs has been a rousing failure. The White House hopes to change that with the brand-new drug-control strategy announced today. Instead of spending every last resource to throw people in prison, the new strategy will "treat illegal drug use more as a public health issue and less as a criminal justice problem," focusing on treatment centers and community-based anti-drug programs. I’ll trade your a Snack Pack for that Heroin

Remember when you brought cupcakes in for your class on your birthday when you were younger?  Well, an eight-year-old boy made quite a splash when he was caught at school with 78 bags of heroin, all stamped with the words “Trust Me." Not sure if they were for his birthday, but a teacher discovered the stash after she noticed the boy fiddling with something in his pocket during an exam. Police have brought in the boy’s mother for questioning but say it’s unlikely he’ll face charges because of his age.  [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

It’s 3PM - Do You Know What Your Kids Are Huffing?

This afternoon in "Why We're Terrified Of Today's Tweens" news, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has a new report on how the precious little snowflakes are getting wasted. According to the survey, more 12-year-olds in the U.S. "get high by sniffing inhalants than by using marijuana, cocaine or hallucinogens combined." That's right, the kids are inhaling "refrigerant from air conditioning units, aerosol computer cleaners, shoe polish, glue, air fresheners, hair sprays, nail polish, paint solvents, degreasers, gasoline and lighter fluids" to catch a buzz, unaware that "huffing" can kill them, destroy their organs, or at least damage their brains to the point they suffer from uncontrollable limb spasms and/or dementia.
