R.I.P.

Lena Horne, the groundbreaking jazz singer and actress "who reviled the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them," has died at the age of 92.  Horne died Sunday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Gloria Chin. Horne was the first black woman to sign a meaningful long-term contract with a major studio, a contract that said she would never have to play a maid. "Movies are a powerful medium and always depicted African American women before Lena Horne as hefty, mammy-like maids who were ditzy and giggling," said Donald Bogle, a film historian. "Lena Horne becomes the first one the studios begin to look at differently. . . . Really just by being there, being composed and onscreen with her dignity intact paved the way for a new day" for black actresses. [WP][CBS News]

RIP Corey

Corey Haim, 80's movie star, passed away Wednesday morning, according to California police. Haim was most well known for his role in the 1987 movie Lost Boys, which he co-stared with Corey Feldman. His death appears to be an overdose, though obviously fans will want to wait for a toxicology report before jumping to conclusions. We'll miss you Corey! [CNN]

Just Plain Cool

Parent Fail.  Big Time.

This is beyond disturbing: A Korean couple allowed their child to starve to death because of their addiction to raising a 'virtual' child in a Second-Life-style game online known as Prius. Kim Yoo-chul, 41, and Choi Mi-sun, 25, would feed their three-month-old baby only when not at 12-hour-online sessions in a local internet café. The pair were obsessed with raising their internet child, called Anima, resulting in the neglect of their unnamed real daughter. After one such session in September the couple found their daughter dead and called police. An autopsy found the baby died from prolonged malnutrition.  Wow. [Huffington Post]
