Act More Gay
This is something you don’t hear very often in the world of sports: You’re not gay enough. Three members of a California softball team competing in the Gay Softball World Series were asked about their “private sexual attractions and desires” before organizers determined they weren’t “gay enough” and stripped their team of its second-place finish. The decision was made when another team complained that San Francisco team’s roster had “too many straights.” [San Francisco Chronicle]

Separate and Unequal
Here's a story that has apparently been buried under other news. Last week, when a Mississippi school district was found to be in violation of the 1970 federal desegregation order last week, it was just the latest piece of evidence indicating a disturbing trend affecting American schools: the “drift back into segregation.” The Obama administration is investigating several cases around the country where it appears that minority students were not given access to the same quality of education as their white peers. Equality And The Military
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to announce certain changes that would ease the controversial "don't ask don't tell" policy prohibiting homosexuals from serving openly in the military. One of the changes: Outings by third parties may no longer be automatic grounds for initiating separation proceedings, especially if it is proven that the person making the allegation has a grudge against the military member." Gates' Thursday announcement will focus on regulatory changes that can be made at the Pentagon without the approval of Congress. [CNN]

PARDON ME
Several men in Kentucky are working to clear the names of several slave rescuers, whose so-called "crimes" today would be recognized as heroic acts. The men are calling on Gov. Steve Beshear to issue pardons for the men and women who helped rescue slaves, albeit posthumously. "I want to resurrect their names and deeds and give them their proper place in history," said James Prichard, 56, a retired state archivist who spent much of his career studying slavery in Kentucky. The idea for the pardons stemmed from a display at Frankfort's Capital City Museum that mentioned the crime of slave stealing. [Mcclatchy]

Barbie Bargain
This is just a business decision, but it really doesn't look good.
Walmart is raising eyebrows after cutting the price of a black Barbie doll to nearly half of that of the doll's white counterpart at one store and possibly others.
A photo first posted to the humor Web site FunnyJunk.com and later to the Latino Web site Guanabee.com shows packages of Mattel's Ballerina Barbie and Ballerina Theresa dolls hanging side by side at an unidentified store. The Theresa dolls, which feature brown skin and dark hair, are marked as being on sale at $3.00. The Barbies to the right of the Theresa dolls, meanwhile, retain their original price of $5.93. The dolls look identical aside from their color.

Catholic Church Hypocrisy? No!
In an interesting display of selective discrimination, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, in Boulder, CO, has refused to readmit a preschooler because the child has two moms. Two dozen demonstrators who turned out at Sunday's church service. The church released a statement saying, "To preserve the mission of our schools, and to respect the faith of wider Catholic community, we expect all families who enroll students to live in accord with Catholic teaching. Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment." One of the protesters said it seems there's a double standard. "I don't think they interview to see what parents are divorced or what parents are using birth control or other things that are against the teaching of the Catholic Church," she said. Amen. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL
U.S. senators are calling for an end to a 1983 ban on gay men that prevent them from donating blood, calling the prohibition "outdated, medically and scientifically unsound." Leading the group of 17 Democrats and one independent was Sen. John Kerry, who wrote a letter to US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, urging the agency to lift the restriction. "With hospitals and emergency rooms across the country in constant and urgent need of blood products, we believe certain blood donor deferral policies should be reviewed and appropriately modified and modernized while ensuring the blood supply meets the highest possible standards," they wrote. The American Red Cross and other health organizations support ending the ban. [AFP]
