What’s Ghandi’s Email Address, Again?

Just about everything has found a home online, even protest movements, it turns out. “Electronic civil disobedience” has replaced the kind popularized by Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The paper profiles a University of California professor who help fund the Electronic Disturbance Theater, which carries out online protests by “flood[ing] network servers with automatic ‘reload’ requests that can disrupt and slow systems, but not destroy data.”  [LA Times]

Equality For All

Hawaii is close to joining a group of other states in allowing same-sex civil unions in its state.Late last night, the House of Representatives approved a measure that would allow gay and lesbian couples the same rights and benefits that the state provides to married couples. The bill, which still needs the governor's signature to become law, has drawn some of the state's biggest protest rallies. The state's Republican Gov. Linda Lingle hasn't said whether she'll sign the bill or not, but her office did say she would carefully review the bill. If signed, Hawaii will become one of six states – along with California, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington – to grant all the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. Canceling Prom

Rather than let a lesbian couple attend their prom together, the the Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Mississippi canceled the event for all students. The school went on to say, "It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors." A private event wouldn't be subject to the same legal standards (like equality for everyone) as the public school. [Clarion Ledger]

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL

U.S. senators are calling for an end to a 1983 ban on gay men that prevent them from donating blood, calling the prohibition "outdated, medically and scientifically unsound." Leading the group of 17 Democrats and one independent was Sen. John Kerry, who wrote a letter to US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, urging the agency to lift the restriction. "With hospitals and emergency rooms across the country in constant and urgent need of blood products, we believe certain blood donor deferral policies should be reviewed and appropriately modified and modernized while ensuring the blood supply meets the highest possible standards," they wrote. The American Red Cross and other health organizations support ending the ban. [AFP]

PROGRESS IN D.C.

At least 50 couples were waiting outside Washington D.C.'s city's marriage bureau this morning when it opened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, after the Supreme Court refused to block the city's gay marriage law yesterday. Although couples were able to apply for licenses today, because of a mandatory waiting period, couples won't actually be able to marry in the District until March 9th. Washington will be the sixth place in the nation where gay marriages can take place. . Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont currently issue licenses to same-sex couples.
